No Notary? Unlisted number?
Reviewed by Arno, 2008-04-23 09:59:34

We are new to Menlo Park, just blocks from the bank. Very convenient. We're quite impressed with their ATM deposit which lets you put in a stack of deposit checks w/o envelope. Though I was put off by the effusive bubblehead who just couldn't get my name right when opening our account, even reading from my license. After correcting her twice I still had to send the checks back. (It's not Tom Jones but almost as easy)
Today I tried to call to see if they could notarize our signatures for the house sale in Ohio (finally!). I discovered his branch is unlisted in the phone directories! After calling the national business center # and waiting, I finally got the unpublished #.
When I called to ask about the notary services, i was told they only did Wells Fargo documents, though if I came at 2:30 the notary could do it on her lunch hour for fee. I was quite surprised, notary service is a standard part of banking in other states.
Because my wife had only a short time this morning to get the notary, we went to the UPS Store on El Camino. The fee was $10 per signature. (Max allowed by Cal law -- they also got our thumb prints in the journal)
Walking back I stopped in to see the bank manager. I told her we were new to the bank, my wife and I both have direct deposit, three accounts, cards, and maintain 30K in checking. What about notary service?
She said that WF notaries were qualified to do only WF work and certain investment documents - that it was "federal' rule. I supposed she meant a 'national' rule for all WF banks, and i asked if WF banks everywhere did this. Yes, it's a federal rule she said again.
She said nothing about her own notary doing non-WF during lunch hour; she had just said they weren't qualified to do that.
Back home I've verified that WF banks in Montana and Minnesota have free notary service for customers ($1 for others).
I'm not sure why we started with WF when moving here, but this experience is going to get us to do some comparison shopping.
I have considered notary a standard bank service, though I now realize that the new CA law (1/1/08) makes notary work a good deal more complicated. If we can find another Menlo bank that offers such services, and the manager doesn't misinform us about 'federal' rules, we may move our accounts there -- even if they don't have such cool ATMs.
