The U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday named six area elementary and middle schools as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The schools are among 24 in California winning the award. The middle schools include La Entrada Middle in the Las Lomitas district in Menlo Park; Dilworth Elementary in the Cupertino Union district; Egan and Blach junior high schools in the Los Altos district; Bullis Purissima Charter Elementary in Los Altos, overseen by the Santa Clara County Office of Education; and Mission San Jose Elementary in the Fremont Unified district.

The schools are among 337 schools across the nation honored for either high achievement or significant academic improvement among racial minorities and disadvantaged students. The winners will be honored at ceremonies Nov. 10 and 11 in Washington, D.C., where each winner will receive a plaque and flag.
